Trials and Tribulations

I got new eyes for Rebekah so I decided to swap them out and I took some photos of her.  Looking at the photos I realized the eyes weren’t positioned right and she just looked startled in all of them.

I tried to fix them but they have a little nub on the back and it hits against the hook inside her head and won’t go where I want them to go.  I cut off the nub on one but continued to have problems so I decided to put her old eyes back in and look for flat backed eyes for her instead.

That’s when I dropped her face first on the bathroom floor.  She’s actually fine but my nerves are not.  Why did I have her with the back of her head off, futzing with her eyes in the bathroom you ask?  Because I’m an idiot…

Doll Talk

After my experience with Aidolls (Custom House) and reading about really long wait times and order mix-ups with Latidoll, I will admit, I was worried.  It turns out I didn’t need to be.  My Lati Yellow Lea shipped within the time frame they gave on the site and when she arrived she was exactly as I’d ordered her.

Now when my little UU arrived she was loose in a big box, wrapped in bubble wrap.  Ditto on the head they sent later, with the eyes not even placed nor any putty to attach them.

In my excitement I didn’t get any unboxing photos for Lea.  The difference, however, was very apparent.  First off there was a pretty blue Latidoll box inside the shipping box.  Upon opening that box I didn’t see a loose doll bouncing around but rather a well wrapped doll on top of pillows with a plastic face protector on.  The box is divided in two parts, she was in one.  In the other were her extra hands, her wig and some extra stringing elastic.  Seriously.  I went from a naked little corpse wrapped in bubblewrap inside a huge box with nothing else (except her certificate of authenticity) to this.  I should have taken pictures but as I said, too excited.  Also, Latidoll had actually put the eyes in for me.  Mind you her head is much bigger and changing the eyes won’t be nearly as problematic as it is with the Bisou.

I adore this little girl.  She is so sweet and doesn’t kick all the time like the Bisou.  I’m a little meh on the wig as I can see the wig cap just slightly in the front and there’s a spot in the center that just doesn’t have enough hair and since the wig cap is flesh tone it just looks kind of weird.  But otherwise it’s very pretty and I love that she has long hair.

Now all that said, I don’t dislike the Bisou by any means.  I absolutely adore her too even if she is always kicking and even if I am having a seriously hard time finding a wig for her.

So here they are, unlikely sisters, Anne and Rebekah Jean.

Rebekah is wearing a hand crocheted dress and hat by the absolutely fabulous Leshan.  Anne is wearing a dress by the hiblythe.

You’ve got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on baby…

I’ve got to say, I’m really surprised at how hard it is to find certain types of information online, for example, when I want to find out about antiques, or presently, trying to find information about particular dolls.  I thought for sure there would be a Barbie Wiki, a real Wiki, with photos and the name of the doll, the release date, etc.  I can’t seem to find that.

I like to collect things but I’m also a big nerd who loves, yes loves, to organize and categorize.  I actually get excited when I have things that I want to look up, find information on and then add that information into a database.  It’s sad isn’t it?  I suppose part of why I went to grad school is because I love to research but this whole writing a thesis thing is not all it’s cracked up to be!

Anyway, this brings me back to my original point.  I’m surprised about the lack of a good Wiki type database of information on collectable things, like, Barbie.  As nerdy as I might be, I don’t know how to start a Wiki.  Once it’s up I know how to use one, more or less and am very good at formatting layouts for things like that.  I can picture it now in my mind.  But, sadly, I don’t know how to get started without already having the Wiki in place so I can just log in and start editing.  What’s really sad is how much the thought of spending my Friday night inputting data into a database makes me giddy with excitement.  Perhaps there’s some sort of pill I can take for that?

In other news, I bought some of the wood I’ll need to start building the doll house.  I have power tools.  Hear me roar.  Unfortunately I don’t think I can get started until I can find someone with a table saw to cut the big pieces for me.  I hate not being able to do it myself.   I wish I knew someone that wanted to help me get started.  Beyond that I’ll be fine I’m sure…

Well I also bought some black satin spray paint for plastic.  I bought the Gloria Wine Rack Cabinet, both sets.  They are a bubble gum pink but otherwise really quite cool.  I want to spray the pink parts black.  With any luck this summer will be a summer filled with building things and sewing (someday I will start sewing again instead of standing in my sewing room, staring around blankly).  Who knows I may even work on my thesis…  HA HA HA HA….

Bright ideas

So, I’ve got it in my head that I need to make these playscale scenes.  For a long time I bemoaned the fact that I can’t draw, at least not the way I’d like to, and so I can’t make this graphic novel that’s been kicking around in my head forever.

Since I’ve discovered BJDs and fashion dolls and the like, the wheels have started to turn.  Then I decided that even though I couldn’t draw the images I wanted, I could try to customize dolls to fit the characters and then?  I don’t know.  Maybe I’m just looking for another way to pass the time.  Who knows.  It’s actually not an easy task to figure out a way to customize dolls to fit characters you have only ever seen in your head.  Maybe I’m a giant nerd (I know I am actually) but I think it’s a cool idea.

Now I’ve got it in my head that I need to create a room box that is a portion of a nightclub from this story I have held onto for years.  Of course I do.  I have no idea what I’m doing but like I said before, when has that ever stopped me?  It would be a good idea to move from the planning and ideas in my head to actual construction.

I’ll freely admit I’m slightly intimidated to go to the hardware store to pick up the wood I need.  I would love to have someone who has wood working experience go in with me.  But ultimately I’ll probably just make my mother come with me so I’m not alone.  I really want to start on the house, as exciting as the bar is, the house supplies need to be bought so that the house is completed in the next few months and I have somewhere to start storing the stuff I have.

It’s been really really  hard to find supplies in the size I need.  Apart from Ebay and Etsy, I’m fairly out of luck and sometimes the cost of shipping makes it so I just can’t justify a purchase.  That leaves me with needing to make stuff on my own and I’m back to where I was before with very little information out there on how to.  If I manage to put things together and it’s not a total disaster I will be writing up tutorials and posting them here.  No one should have to go through this much frustration.
